L' "Index Astartes" désigne à la fois un document fictif dans l'univers de Warhammer 40,000 et une rubrique d'articles du magazine White Dwarf: C'est un ouvrage mythique archivant l'historique détaillé de l'ensemble des armées de l'Adeptus Astartes; loyalistes comme renégats, toutes fondations confondues.

Généralités
La série des Index Astartes sont des articles de Background du magazine White Dwarf sur les Space Marines en quatre 'livres' parus entre 2002 et 2004. La plupart des articles se rapportent à une légion renégate ou loyaliste de la Première Fondation, mais aussi à certains chapitres de la Seconde Fondation, parfois plus spécifiques comme les Chevaliers Gris ou la Deathwatch. Ces articles sont accompagnés d'autres montrant des aspects particuliers de l'Adeptus Astartes, comme les Chapelains ou les Dreadnoughts. Ces livres sont parus dans toutes les langues de publication du magazine White Dwarf (not. allemand, français et espagnol) rassemblant chacun les articles parus dans leur langue d'origine.
